Introducing our Guest Artist for the Advanced Ballet Intensive, Katherine Lawrence!

Katherine Larence

Katherine Lawrence, a native of Fairfield, Connecticut, began her ballet training at Connecticut Dance School and furthered her training at The Harid Conservatory where she graduated as Valedictorian in 1998.  She joined Ballet Internationale, Indianapolis in 1999, and quickly rose to the rank of Soloist.  In 2004, Ms. Lawrence joined Ballet West where she is currently a Principal Artist.  She has also performed with The Universal Ballet of Korea, The Hartford Ballet, Canyon Concert Ballet, Kansas Ballet Company, Dance Wisconsin, Peoria Ballet and Metropolitan Ballet of Topeka.  Additionally, Ms. Lawrence is a founding member of contemporary dance companies NOW-ID, RUUDANCES, and Dance Grand Moultrie.  Special appearances have included the 25th International Ballet Festival of Havana, the Gala of International Dance Stars, Harid’s 15th Anniversary Gala, New York City’s Fall for Dance Festival, the Chicago Dancing Festival, the Utah Arts Festival, and Perry-Mansfield's New Works Festival.  Ms. Lawrence's career has taken her around the globe to some of the world’s most renowned theaters including The Kennedy Center in our nation’s capital; New York City’s Lincoln Center, City Center, Joyce Theater, and Summer Stage; The Dorothy Chandler Music Pavilion in Los Angeles; and internationally to stages across Cuba, Denmark, China, Taiwan, Scotland, and South Korea.  

Ms. Lawrence’s repertoire includes the dual role of Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Aurora and Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty, the title role in Cinderella, Kitri in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Don Quixote, Liberty Bell in George Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes, Svetlana in Ben Stevenson’s Dracula, the fourth duet in Jiri Kylian’s Petit Mort, the title role in Willam Christensen's The Firebird, Sugar Plum Fairy and Snow Queen in Christensen’s The Nutcracker, Sanguinic in Balanchine's The Four Temperments, Tessie Hutchinson in Val Caniporoli's The Lottery, Wendy in John McFall’s Peter Pan, the title role in The Fairy Doll, Myrtha in Giselle, the Nurse in Flemming Flindt's Phaedra, Indian Girl in Christopher Bruce's Ghost Dances, the Enchanted Bird in Eldar Aliev's A Thousand and One Nights, and principal roles in Balanchine’s Who Cares? and Jewels, Paquita, Mark Morris’s Gong, Antony Tudor’s Echoing of Trumpets, John Butler's Carmina Burana, and Nicolo Fonte’s Bolero.  Original works created on Ms. Lawrence include Charlotte Boye-Christensen's The Wedding, NOWHERE, Exodus, and Row, Fonte's Rite of Spring, Presto, and Carmina Burana, Moultrie's Everlasting Heights, and Christopher Ruud's Trapped.

In addition to her extensive performing career, Ms. Lawrence enjoys teaching ballet and sharing her art form with the next generation of dancers.  She has served as a temporary Ballet Mistress for Ballet West II and as a coach for various student productions, as well as for students competing at Youth America Grand Prix.  Ms. Lawrence holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Ballet with a Teaching Emphasis from the University of Utah.  She has taught ballet technique, pointe, variations, repertoire, pas de deux, and adult classes for the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, the Clara R. Noyes Academy of Ballet Internationale, Canyon Concert Ballet and Dance Center, Connecticut Dance School, Creative Arts Academy, and as a guest teacher at various local dance programs.

NOTE: Early Check-In for BYU Housing is no longer available. BYU Housing will be available the day each camp / workshop / intensive starts, but not before. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Participants will enrich their ballet training under the skillful eye of some of the finest artists in the profession. BYU’s Summer Ballet Intensives offer experience in artistic training, including ballet technique, pointe and variations, character, jazz, and modern dance. Activities and discussions in conditioning, nutrition, and injury prevention will complement the two weeks of dance instruction. Each dancer will receive individual feedback and personal evaluations to improve artistic and technical development. Two weeks of instruction and rehearsal culminate in a final performance that showcases each dancer’s talents and what has been learned.

Director

Suzi Wood

Suzi Wood

Director Suzi Wood comes from Los Angeles, Calif., and was trained under Natalie Claire, receiving a full Ford Foundation Scholarship to the School of American Ballet in New York City when she was 15. She danced professionally with Ballet West while also attending the University of Utah, and later received her B.S. in elementary education from Brigham Young University. Upon graduation she was invited to be on the ballet faculty at BYU. Suzi and her musician husband Rob founded and for eight years directed the Studio for the Performing Arts in Fallon, Nevada, teaching ballet and music and directing community companies. She then was invited to direct the Aspen (Colorado) Ballet School for six years. It became the official school for the Aspen Ballet Company, now the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Since moving to Utah, Suzi has taught for many private studios and Utah Regional Ballet. She has taught all levels of ballet at BYU, including variations and pointe classes as well as assisting with theatre ballet. She is currently the artistic director of the Ballet Showcase Company.

Selected instructors from BYU's outstanding dance faculty will teach at both workshops.

  • Full tuition is due at the time of registration. No deposits will be accepted.
  • A refund for audition fees (minus $5 nonrefundable) will be granted until January 26, 2018, 4:00 p.m.
  •  To request a refund, please call the Registration Office 801-422-8925, weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. mountain time, excluding holidays.
